Bristol started like a town within the Gloucestershire facet of the Avon, but since it grew it extended over the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "that the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it should be a county by by itself".[50]A
